WHEN DID YOU BECOME WINNIE'S?
Winnie's Bakery bought the business from it's previous owners back in November 2006. We have nothing to do with the previous owners. We have our Bakery in the back of our store in Weston-super-Mare (5 Meadow Street), and a shop in Burnham-on-Sea (30 High Street).

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO STORE MY BREAD?
Winnie's Sourdough stays fresh much longer than bread made with chemical additives and bakers yeast. After slicing, place the loaf cut side down on the bread board. For best results, wrap the bread in a linen tea towel and store in a bread bin.

WHY DOES MY SLICED LOAF FROM THE SUPERMARKET SMELL FUNNY?
We don't believe in putting chemical preservatives in our bread, like calcium phosphate (E341), that strange nose tingling smell when you open a bag of long life sliced bread. Also, if you're making a great loaf of bread, why would you put Vinegar in it? It's a loaf of bread, not Fish 'n' Chips.

WHY DOES WINNIE’S BREAD HAVE FLAVOUR?
We believe that bread should be fermented in a traditional way that allows the natural flavours to develop, rather than the "no-time" methods so prevalent in other bakeries.

ARE WINNIE’S BAKERY PRODUCTS SUITABLE FOR ALLERGEN SUFFERERS?
Our bread contains wheat gluten. However, we do use nuts on the premises, and therefore would not recommend any of our products for nut alergy sufferers, sorry.
Other products may contain other allergens (lactose, etc). Please ask in the shop for further details if you have any concerns.

WHY IS YOUR INGREDIENT LIST SO SHORT?

We believe that bread should be made using a traditional recipe. When bread was first made, did they have what you would find on your sliced bread wrapper ingredient list? They had flour, salt and natural yeasts.

DOES YOUR BREAD HAVE ANY ADDITIVES?
Thanks to arcane legislation, our white flour products contain: Calcium, Iron, Thiamine (Vitamin B1) and Nicotinic Acid. Currently the Government are considering putting in Folic Acid too (and because they are legal requirements, they do not need to be included on the ingredient list).

Whilst we can see the benefits of fortifying foods, we believe that if people ate good food in the first place, we wouldn't need to mass medicate. That is why you won't find other faddy food supplements, like Omega 3 bread in our shops, why not try a tuna sandwich instead?

I LIKE THIN SLICES BUT MY PARTNER LIKE THICK SLICES, WHAT CAN WE DO?

Why not try the long lost art of slicing the loaf yourself then everyone can enjoy the great flavour. Why not ask one of our bakers for a lesson, and learn the skills of the trade?

IS BREAD GOOD OR BAD FOR YOU?
There are many faddy reports that say a high carbohyradte diet is bad for you, some even going as far as saying it will cause IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). However, bread has been a staple of the diet for the last 6000 years, and only recently when mass production, no-time methods have become the norm, has bread been deemed bad for you. It has be proven that naturally fermented bread creates bread that is easily digested, and has better flavour.

In summary, we believe bread is good for you, if you eat good bread.
